Following the vote, a number of House Republicans expressed surprise and frustration.
“Nobody knows what’s going to happen next, including all the people who voted to vacate (they) have no earthly idea what, they have no plan,” McCarthy fan and House Rules defender Chairman Tom Cole said. They don’t have an option at this time. So it’s really a vote for anarchy.
House Democrats made it clear before of the vote that they would not back McCarthy up.
House Democrats, on the other hand, are deeply skeptical of McCarthy and his activities as speaker, as well as the House GOP program.
In a letter to his caucus, House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries stated that the leadership planned to vote in favor of McCarthy’s removal before the final vote.
